Bristol grass racer Rod Melksham ended the season in winning style in the SWEGA's final meeting of the year at Plymtree, near Cullompton in Devon, on Sunday.

He was unbeaten in the open class, which like the other four classes were decided over five point-scoring races on the superbly smooth Harvesthayes farm circuit.

The 350cc races also kept the crowd on their toes, with Max Sanford, John Weeks and John Shanes being closely matched before Sanford won the last race to clinch top spot. Tiverton crew Clive Stoneman and Roland Broomfield scored most points in the 1,000cc sidecar class over seven events.

Wessex Centre trial champion Colin Crease suffered a rare defeat in the Kingswood Club's Hawkesbury Cup Trial at Compton Greenfield, near Pilning, on Sunday.

In a low-scoring four-lap, 10-section event at Elmington Manor Farm, the Frome clubman dropped two marks in the fifth section and was beaten by Somerset's Gary Marshman, who lost a single mark in the same section. Two marks separated Trevor Ashford and Jason Atwell in the clubman's expert class on the same route.

Martyn Wilmore was best in the over-40 class, losing five marks overall.

Martin Strang seems to improve with age, and the veteran from Compton Dundon in Somerset won the over-50 class with a single-mark penalty incurred in the sixth section.

Peter King won the North Somerset club's timed and observation trial for the Ivan Manning Trophy at Malthouse Farm, Chelwood, on Sunday. He was the first of 45 competitors to complete the hour-long event and lost only nine marks on observation – three in the fifth section and six on a descent into a gully that was followed by a climb into the third section.

The fifth, a cambered climb, claimed marks from the entire field at some stage and it took three marks from King, runner-up Paul Manning and first class award winners Jeremy Walters and John Leigh. King also lost half a dozen marks on a descent into a gully, which was followed by a climb in the third section.

Chippenham's Stephen Sword made a winning debut in the open class in the final round of the British Moto-X Championships at Landrake in Cornwall. However, he has missed out on a place in the British team for next weekend's Motocross Des Nations event in Italy, as Billy Mackenzie and Shaun Simpson have been chosen in place of the injured Brad Anderson and Carl Nunn.
