Artistic youngsters who collaborated with a Moroccan painter in a project to teach them more about Islamic culture displayed their work at the City Museum and Art Gallery.

The pupils, from St Mary Redcliffe and Temple CofE School and Bristol Metropolitan College, joined artist Mo Ouammi at the museum for a celebratory evening of Moroccan food, music and a certificate presentation.

They also showed off wood paintings and a mosaic they created during the month-long partnership.

Mr Ouammi, who lives in Redfield, has run projects on Islamic art at the museum for the past five years.

He said: "We went into the schools to help give the students a little knowledge of Arabic culture and links between Arabic countries and England.

"One student thought Islam was a country and Islamabad was the capital, and didn't know it was a religion.

"Now they know about Arabic countries, how many there are and a bit about Islam.

"The students enjoyed the project and worked really hard in such a short time, creating mosaics from wood and beautiful paintings, and it was very rewarding to see them begin to show an interest in this culture."

The youngsters' work was part of a the Arab World Education programme, which invites British-Arab/Middle Eastern artists into schools to give workshops to pupils.
