Bristol pub landlady caught selling stolen goods by undercover policeman
The landlady of a Bristol "underworld drinking den" who handled stolen goods at the premises has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Jennifer Bell, the licensee of The Oxford public house in Totterdown, was arrested as part of an undercover police operation to crack down on acquisitive crime in the city.
Bell, 36, of St John's Lane, Bedminster, supplied one covert officer who posed as a drinker at the pub with five stolen computers and two digital cameras and told him she received goods all the time.
She was arrested in March this year at the end of the operation and later admitted three charges of handling stolen goods.
Bell was handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and will be supervised for 12 months by the probation service.
She was also subject to a six-month tagged curfew and a prohibition activity requirement preventing her from holding or applying for a licence for selling alcohol from May 1 next year.
Fiona Elder, prosecuting, at Bristol Crown Court, said the landlady of The Oxford came to the attention of police during their surveillance of the pub during an undercover operation targeting acquisitive crime and drugs supply, although Bell was not involved in drugs.
The court heard that the pub, described by Judge Julian Lambert as an "underworld drinking den" was the scene of three transactions between Bell and an officer, known as Ian.
Bell was arrested towards the end of the operation in March this year.
Tabitha Macfarlane, defending, said her client had now turned over the running of the pub to a friend.
She said her client had been having money difficulties when the rent of the pub went up and, at the same time, she had to pay for expensive dental reconstruction treatment after a boy threw a lit firework into her mouth.

“The Oxford is by far the worst thing about Totterdown. When it's been shut down a couple of times in the past, the area felt much safer and positive. It creates a feeling of intimidation around 'Totterdown Square' and often seems to be a drive-thru for drugs. Friends have told me they've even seen people in there with guns. It would do everyone in Totterdown a big favour if the place was shut down and never allowed to re-open as a pub.”
