A Bristol primary school has seen its playground transformed after it won £10,000 in a competition.

Children at Bishop Road School used to run around a drab car park, which was still marked out with parking spaces.

Now they have a spectacular outdoor area that includes a castle and a trim trail.

Pupils at the Bishopston primary designed the new facilities after they beat off competition from 80 other schools in the South West to win the regional Dream Playgrounds competition run by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group and national school grounds charity Learning through Landscapes.

The improved grounds, which also include trees, plants, and areas to shelter, hide and climb on, have now been completed and were officially launched by Bristol West Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Williams and Pete McCarthy, regional managing director for NatWest (part of the RBS Group).

Mr McCarthy said: "Bishop Road Primary School are a very deserving winner and have really used their Dream Playground prize to make a big difference.

"The quality of a school's grounds is important to pupils and teachers as they can help towards raising attainment and improve concentration in the class.

"Schools often struggle to find the money to make improvements so it is great to see what an impact this prize has had on the pupils and the community and I'm delighted that the RBS Group has been able to help them in this way."

Head teacher Gillian Powe said: "We are delighted that Dream Playgrounds has funded the new trim trail that the children had been hoping for. This, together with the other seating and equipment we have in the playground, means that there has been a huge improvement in outdoor creative and physical play.

"Dream Playgrounds has enhanced the opportunities for our children to be active, in line with our Healthy School status and our recently awarded Active Mark 2008. It was great to see how excited they all were when the equipment arrived."
