Bristol pole vaulter aiming high at the England Athletics Championships
Denied the chance of competing in the English Schools' Championships, Lucy Bryan is hoping to provide a golden finale to her season at the England Athletics Championships tomorrow.
The 14-year-old Bristol & West AC pole vaulter travels to Bedford with high hopes as she is No 1 in the UK Under-15 rankings with an outdoor best of 3.35m, although that is inferior to the 3.42m – which was a championship record – she cleared when winning the England Athletics Indoors title in February.

Adding the outdoor title would complete a marvellous double for the Backwell-based teenager, who missed out on the Schools' Championship event because the pole vault isn't on the junior girls' programme. She was selected for the high jump instead, but a family holiday meant she could not compete.
So this weekend represents Bryan's biggest competition of the summer and she is determined to give it her best shot.
"I am hoping to get into the top three and I would love to win it," said Bryan. "My form is okay and I'm feeling quite good, but Nancy (Epsly) and I are about the same standard so it will be a tough competition."
Chelmsford's Epsly, whom Bryan beat indoors, has a season's best of 3.30m, while Team Bath's Hannah Grubb, who has jumped 3.10m, will also be a rival.
"This will be my biggest competition of the summer so hopefully it will go well," added Bryan, who is unbeaten in the event this summer, winning all seven competitions.
Two other Bristol & West AC pole vaulters are also in action at Bedford with Luke Bailey and Tom Gibson entered for the Under-17 men's event on Sunday.
Bailey, 16, has already had a good season, winning a bronze medal in the inter boys' event at the English Schools' Championships as he equalled his personal best of 4.20m.
That puts him equal sixth in the UK rankings, a position he shares with 16-year-old Gibson, but both teenagers have the ability to get among the medals if they can produce their best form on the day.
On the track, Yate & District AC sprinters Ollie Haines and Elliott Prendergast are both entered. Elliott runs in the Under-15 boys' 100m and 200m, while Prendergast will be looking to better the PB of 23.64secs that he ran in the English Schools' 200m.
Backwell athlete Bethan Wakefield has entered the Under-15s 100m and 200m, plus the long jump.
Hayley Smith won a bronze medal at the Midland Championships and the 15-year-old Yate athlete will be looking to better her PB of 40.75secs in the Under-17 women's 300m.
● Entries have closed for tonight's Towpath 10k multi-terrain race from Greville Smythe Park, Ashton (7.30pm) and entries are closed.
● Claire Hallissey will line up for the Newark half marathon on Sunday to give herself an insight into the event before running the Bristol half next month.
It will be the Bristol & West AC international's first serious attempt at the distance and she clearly has the potential to run a very fast time.
● The fifth Yeovil 5k road race will be held from RNAS Yeovilton next Wednesday (7.15pm), with entries taken on the night. For further details, see the race website at: www.yeoviltownrr.com.
● In tomorrow's Post, find out who won the Easy Runner athlete of the month award for July.
