Bristol murder accused: Aunt called for help
One of the men accused of the murder of Bristol dad Alan Riddock told a jury Diane Churchley called members of her family for help before the fatal beating.
Jason Hartrey said he was at his home with his cousins Paddy and John Churchley when his aunt phoned, saying she had had a disagreement with somebody to do with the Park House pub.
He told Bristol Crown Court that, concerned, he asked her what was going on.
He said: "She wanted someone to go round there and help her, and it wasn't me. She wanted someone to go round there and cause trouble, like she always does, and she got what she wanted."
A jury has been told Mr Riddock had been standing outside the front of the pub, in St John's Lane, Bedminster, when Diane Churchley was involved in a row with a pub staff member.
The court has heard that during the disturbance Mr Riddock dropped his trousers and exposed his backside in view of Mrs Churchley, who was standing outside her home opposite. It is claimed enraged Churchley told him he was "a dead man" before ordering her sons John and Liam and their cousins Jason and Craig Hartrey to get him.
Denying murder on May 24 last year are: Diane Churchley, 50, of St John's Lane, Bedminster; Liam Churchley, 20, of St John's Lane, Bedminster; Jason Hartrey, 39, of Dawlish Road, Bedminster; John Churchley, 23, of Queens Road, Withywood; Craig Hartrey, 36, of St John's Lane, Bedminster. All of the accused also deny intending to cause grievous bodily harm to Mr Riddock's friend, Jonathan Stephens. Diane Churchley is also charged with assisting an offender by washing Liam Churchley's clothes and shoes and washing and hiding his baseball bat.
Jason Hartrey told the court he had an identical twin called Brennan who was born five minutes before him.
He said for some six to eight weeks before Mr Riddock's death he had been dealing drugs with John Churchley.
Jason Hartrey said that on the night of Friday, May 23, he and his girlfriend went nightclubbing, took ecstasy, and didn't return home until 4am or 5am.
He said that on Saturday, May 24 last year – the day Bristol City went to Wembley to contest the Championship play-off – he was visited at home by John and Paddy Churchley, and one of Paddy's friends. It was about 7.30pm, he said, when Diane Churchley rang his girlfriend's phone. She handed the phone to Paddy and he overheard a discussion about a row Diane had had.
He said he didn't join in an attack on Mr Riddock, but joined Paddy and John Churchley later to smoke and "cut up" drugs.
The case continues.
