A mother from Henleaze is appealing for help to set up a youth group.

Liz Radford is working with local vicar the Rev Mark Pilgrim to start up a regular Saturday night club for 11- to 17-year-olds in Henleaze.

Mrs Radford, 40, who has three young children, got the idea when talking to other parents about what was on offer in the area for young people.

The part-time book-keeper said: "We have problems with graffiti in Henleaze, and you see youngsters hanging around on the streets with nothing to do on a Saturday night.

"Parents also say that when children get to the age of 11, they go off to schools all around Bristol, and don't necessarily know the other children in the area they live in. We want to try to address this and give them somewhere to go and spend time with each other."

Mrs Radford, of Park Grove, says they need about £16,000 to get going – to pay for venue costs and a youth worker for a year.

She has applied for funding from the Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Neighbourhood Partnership.

She is organising focus groups with local children to find out more about their ideas, and is also looking for money from other organisations.

She said: "It would be great if there were any businesses who wanted to help us out. Even a small amount of money could help.

"I think this could make a great difference for young people round here."
