The latest round of major roadworks on Bristol's motorway system affects the M5 at Avonmouth Bridge.

Resurfacing and waterproofing work started on the northbound carriageway a week ago and is scheduled to go on almost until Christmas.

Lane closures, narrowed lanes and a 50mph limit, enforced by cameras, are affecting a 3km (about two-mile) stretch between the Avonmouth and Portbury junctions. A contraflow system will also be installed during some of the work.

The Highways Agency said drivers should expect delays of about 10 minutes but at some points journey times of up to one and a half hours have been reported from Weston-super-Mare to Bristol.

Emergency recovery will be provided within the working area to deal. Three lanes will remain open in each direction throughout the work, which is scheduled to continue until December 6 but could take longer if it rains a lot.

Philip Gomm, of the Royal Automobile Club Association, said: "Check the Highways Agency website or ring the call centre on 08457 504030 to get travel information."
