Architect George Ferguson has credited Barbara Janke, who today announced she was standing down as leader of Bristol City Council, as someone who has done "great things" for Bristol.

However, he added that he believed Mrs Janke had been operating "with one hand tied behind her back" due to a system which was very party political and played "games in the city council".

Mrs Janke announced her resignation as Bristol City Council leader and leader of Bristol's Liberal Democrat Party this morning - just a week before a referendum to decide whether Bristol should have an elected mayor.

The Clifton councillor has been critical of the idea of an elected mayor for Bristol, stating that they would be no more than a "professional politician" who could do no better than traditional council leaders.

The thought of the possibility ensures a NO vote from me.”

“We need elections for all councilors and mayor every four years and those that stand should have lived in the Bristol area for a minimum of 15 years to prevent 'professional politicians' parachuting in. I noticed that not one of the front runners to replace B Janke was born even close to Bristol.”

“Stick to what you do best Mr F as your comment re: Barbara Janke shows a worrying lack of political awareness - though suspect ego & vote chasing may have something to do with this.”

    “George Ferguson?

I'd rather have Sir Alex Ferguson. His self, as opposed to community interest, was clear over the Sainsburys decision.

In any event, the Mayor should cover a metroploitan area to have any effect not just central Bristol.”

“How did he "throw his hat into the ring" as a candidate? The vote has not even been passed as to whether Bristol is even going to be able to elect a Mayor. This headline is misleading as there are no candidates for Bristol Mayor as yet.”
