Bristol man jailed for carrying knives
A judge jailed a knife-wielding man for six months, saying that carrying a weapon would not be tolerated on the streets of Bristol.
Father-of-four David Boyce, 23, went back to his flat after a fight, picked up two knives and returned to look for those he had clashed with.
His lawyer, Jason Taylor, pleaded with the judge not to base his sentence on the current knife crime issues in Bristol.
On Saturday, 17-year-old Shevon Wilson was stabbed to death outside the World's End Inn in St George.
Sam Lengfeld, 23, from St George, appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with his murder.
Bristol Crown Court heard that Boyce was in Miss Millie's on Blackboy Hill with his brother Kevin in the early hours of July 26 when they got into a fight with another group, which included a woman.
A witness, John Tucker, was woken by the disturbance and saw six people shouting, pushing, punching and kicking each other.
He called the police and the group broke up. But five minutes later Boyce and his brother were back.
Prosecuting, Charles Row said: "They appeared to be moving up and down the road looking for someone. Mr Tucker saw David Boyce carrying one knife, glinting in the light.
"Then he saw Kevin Boyce with a gun behind his back. He shouted out and asked what he was holding, and Mr Boyce pulled it from behind his back and pointed it at them.
"He was very frightened and called the police."
On arrest, David was found to have a 23cm kitchen knife and a 21cm metal-handled knife sticking out of his trousers. Kevin was found with a grey handgun and a large knife.
Both men admitted possession of an offensive weapon to police in interview. David later pleaded guilty to the charge at Bristol Magistrates' Court on August 25.
Mr Row added: "Both said they had no intention of using the weapons, but only wanted to scare the group."
Defending, Mr Taylor conceded that knife crime in Bristol needs to be dealt with.
But he said that Boyce's offence was a one-off, compounded by the effects of alcohol, and was a mistake.
He said that Boyce, now of Gotley Road, Brislington, had no qualifications, couldn't read, and that it was an achievement that he had rarely been in trouble before.
Mr Taylor said: "Despite them going back to the flat where they lived, it wasn't planned. They took the action in the spur of the moment."
Sentencing Boyce, His Honour Judge Michael Roach said: "I accept you foolishly went back to your flat and returned to the scene with two knives. You brought knives on to the street in a busy area of Bristol. This sort of offence cannot be tolerated and won't be tolerated."
Kevin Boyce was charged with possession of an imitation firearm, and will appear at Bristol Crown Court on December 12.

“I thought the Gov't brought in sentencing guidelines that stipulated that anyone over 16 years old would get a mandatory 5 year detention if convicted. How are judges allowed to reduce the jail term to 6 months from 5 years?? 6 months is no deterrant! What is in his drunk, agitated state he'd thought an innocent person was one of the people who'disrespected' him? Lock him away for a long time as a message to the other knife carrying idiots in Bristol and maybe less people will be vitims of knife crime, be it being stabbed or mugged/intimidated at knife point.”

“If 'carrying a weapon would not be tolerated in Bristol' how come three people have been stabbed in the last five days?”

“John, Briz
Beat me to it, well put my mate.
Is not going home, gathering weapons, and returning to the scene, premeditated?
Seems like nowadays its just palmed off as foolish behavior”

“The article states that Kevin was carrying a handgun, however he was charged with carrying an imitation firearm.
Bad journalism or weak courts
You decide”

“Mr Boyce is a father of 4 at the age of 23, yet apparently lived with his brother.
He couldn't read....
Shame about that as he might have been able to understand how to open a condom packet if he'd been able to make out the instructions.
Waste of space.”
