Bristol man denies drug dealer
A St Paul's man told a jury he was a successful dance promoter and DJ, but not a drug pusher.
Tumaini Matsimela told Bristol Crown Court the £25,200 in cash police found at his home in Wilson Street was money he made through music, not drugs.
The court heard a police raid on the home in December 2007 netted quantities of drugs as well as cash.
Occupants Jumoke Matsimela, 24, and Abiola Matsimela, 27, both admit possessing cannabis with intent to supply.
Their brother Tumaini, 26, of the same address, denies possessing £2,500 worth of cannabis, cocaine and heroin with intent to supply and is on trial.
Yesterday, he was cleared of cannabis possession.
Matsimela told the jury he worked as a DJ and also ran Keep It Movin' Promotions, staging dance events, where he sold music CDs, DVDs and T-shirts.
He said he also did a weekly Tuesday night stint on Bristol radio station Passion FM.
He told the jury: "Police found £21,000 in my mum's wardrobe and that was mine.
"It came from DJing and promoting, it was basically music."
Matsimela explained that he stored cash in his mother's wardrobe for security, as sometimes people he didn't know very well used music equipment in his bedroom.
He said: "None of the money came from dealing Class A drugs. None of the money in my bedroom came from dealing Class A drugs."
He admitted owning fake Prada training shoes and sunglasses, but said he knew nothing about a Prada bag containing heroin and cocaine, which the prosecution claims was thrown out of his house when police called.
He also said he knew nothing about a razor blade or scales found in his room.
James Ward, prosecuting, told the jury police forced the front door of the property.
They were struck by a "stench" of cannabis and bags of vegetable matter, mobile phones, digital scales and just over £26,000 cash were discovered.
The jury was told several bags of cannabis were found in Jumoke's first-floor rear bedroom, including a Tesco bag containing £2,391 worth and an M&S bag with £1,035 worth.
There were also several bags of vegetable matter found in Abiola's top-floor rear bedroom, including two plastic bags containing at total of £29.31 worth.
In Tumaini's room police found around 4g of cannabis.
It is the prosecution's case that a silver Prada bag, found to contain Class A drugs, was thrown out of a back window of the house on to the next door neighbour's lawn.
The jury has heard that no DNA was found on the bag linking anyone to it, and Tumaini's fingerprints were not detected on any of the drugs.
As well as that, there were no "dealer's lists", normally associated with drug pushers, cataloguing amounts of drugs dealt to which customers.
The case continues at Bristol Crown Court.
