A Bristol motorist who had enjoyed a celebratory drink to toast getting a new job was caught drink driving on his way home, a court heard.

David Parton, 49, who lives in Portbury Grove, Shirehampton, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Andrea Edwards, prosecuting, said Parton was stopped by police at 11.20pm on July 6 in Long Cross, Lawrence Weston. Officers noticed that he was slurring his words and that his breath smelt of alcohol.

A breath test revealed he had 42 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg. Because the reading was close to the legal limit, Parton's blood was also checked and it revealed 86 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, with the legal limit being 80mg.

Defending himself, Parton said he had been celebrating a new job at a cold storage centre in Severn Beach after being made redundant and added he had "one more than I meant to have".

He said a driving ban would be problematic because he used his car to take his elderly mother shopping.

Magistrates banned Parton from driving for 12 months and ordered him to pay a £285 fine, £15 victim surcharge and £60 costs.

The bench chairwoman said: "It's a great shame that after getting a job, you celebrated a little too long."
