Bristol man 'battered' victim for no reason
A Bristol tyre fitter who set upon a man at a petrol station and left him "battered" has been jailed for 21 months.
Scott Abbott, 20, reined blows onto his victim Jon Reid outside the forecourt of a garage in Shirehampton before two of his friends joined in, a court heard.
Mr Reid, who had gone into the 24-hour garage in the early hours of August 30 last year, was left with a broken ankle as well as bruises, cuts and swelling to his face.
CCTV footage of the attack was shown to Judge David Ticehurst at Bristol Crown Court, where Abbott was sentenced to 21 months in a young offenders' institution after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.
The footage showed Abbott attacking Mr Reid before his friends, one armed with a traffic cone, joined in.
Crown Prosecutor Richard Shepherd said Mr Reid had drunk seven pints of beer in Shirehampton before going into the city centre for food and then visiting the petrol station for food.
He said: "The defendant and two colleagues were sitting on a wall and it seems a verbal altercation took place between the parties.
"The victim had a number of punches and kicks. He covered his face but continued to feel the blows, not knowing if they were from feet or fists."
Mr Shepherd said that Mr Abbott had two previous convictions for battery.
Virginia Cornwall, defending, said her client was provoked: "He wasn't out looking for a fight that night and was goaded into it by the actions of Mr Reid."
Ms Cornwall said her client had worked as a tyre fitter but lost his job when he was banned from driving. She said he began drinking more when he split up with his girlfriend.
Judge Ticehurst said: "It was an ugly and serious incident and the victim had a serious injury. The victim says he was bewildered and confused by the whole thing and didn't know what it was about or why they did it."

“Facts? Provoked? Doubt it
Im sure there could have been a lot more to be put into this storey
And using an ex-girlfriend as an excuse is no excuse!
Little sod gets what he deserves”
