A man has been arrested in connection with flytipping next to the A4 Portway.

The man, in his 40s and from Avonmouth, was taken to Southmead police station for questioning.

The arrest followed inquiries by the city council's streetscene enforcement team.

One of the team's officers discovered the dumped waste last week on a small patch of ground near the former Bristol and West sports ground. It included builder's rubble, kitchen units and a cot.

An appeal was launched to track down the culprit and the incident was highlighted in the Evening Post.

The council is now working with the landowner to organise the removal of the waste. This may involve the partial closure of the inbound carriage of the A4 Portway so a lorry can park on a bend to remove the waste safely.

Cabinet Councillor Gary Hopkins, who is in charge of the council's waste management department, said: "To arrest someone in a week is an excellent result for our team and should make any would-be fly-tippers think twice before dumping their waste in the city."

Anyone with information about other fly-tipped waste in the city should contact the council on 922 2100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“If you don't want people to fly tip then encourage us to use the council dump - instead of putting every obstacle imaginable in our way”

“Mucky pup. Let him clean the verges of the entire Portway and take the gash back to Avonmouth.”

“Please don't inform the Police that it might be necessary to close a lane on the Portway, or they might close the M5, just in case.”

why? make the idiot who dumped it there clean it up, he obviously managed to dump it there without closing any lanes off!!!”
