A Bristol man arrested for causing serious injuries to a female police officer kicked out at one of her colleagues, a jury heard.

PC Oomesh Danhawoor told Bristol Crown Court he was driving a police car when Damien Gordon was placed in the back seat and was "kicking off".

The officer described how Gordon stretched out and booted him three times to his left shoulder, causing him to lose control of the car.

It is claimed that when police were called to a disturbance at the Wayfarer pub in Southmead, Gordon hurled a pint glass into the face of PC Henrietta Staveley-Brown, 40.

The impact caused a cut to her forehead and eyelid which needed 26 stitches and has left her permanently scarred.

Gordon, 28, of Lockleaze, denies causing her grievous bodily harm with intent and also denies battery against PC Danhawoor.

The court heard police felt intimidated by a hostile crowd at the pub when they responded to a report of a fight in February.

Gordon was handcuffed and arrested and put in the back of a police car with PC Mike Vass.

PC Danhawoor said: "Once he was in the car he wanted to speak to his girlfriend, who was arrested that night.

"My intention was to take him away from the scene as soon as possible. He was sat on the near side of the car, behind the passenger seat.

"As I was driving away I felt a sharp kick to my left shoulder and I felt three blows."

The PC said the blows were so forceful his hands came off the steering wheel, his chest went against it and he lost control.

Having managed to stop the car "metres" from a parked vehicle he turned round to see a fully stretched out Gordon in the back. He told the court: "I exited the vehicle, went to the rear passenger door and opened the door.

"Because of his demeanour I shouted at him to calm down.

"He did not follow my direction, he continued being violent, kicking his legs in the air, and I used my ASP (baton).

"I struck him in the shoulder; I feared he would kick me again. He didn't calm down and as I was not prepared to drive him away in my vehicle he was placed in the crew bus in the cage."

PC Danhawoor conceded it was possible Gordon mentioned his partner was pregnant during the incident in the car.

Inspector Stephen White gave the court a statement in which he described the incident as "almost riotous" and he felt either himself or a colleague could be attacked.

Sergeant James Delafaille also told the court the crowd was very hostile but Gordon wasn't overly aggressive when detained.

PC Tara Packer said she was shocked when she saw PC Staveley-Brown's injury and took her to Frenchay Hospital.

The case continues at Bristol Crown Court.
