A Bristol man who suffers with severe asthma admitted at Bristol Magistrates' Court yesterday to using cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Lloyd Samuels, 66, pleaded guilty to having in his possession 897g of cannabis. He called police to his home in Sydney Road, Horfield, on June 19, after £3,000 in cash was stolen from his property along with two plastic boxes of "green vegetable matter".

Samuels, who is retired, was arrested and in police interview he admitted that the two boxes of class B drugs that were found near his property belonged to him.

Defence lawyer Anne Pitman said: "Mr Samuels made a full admission and volunteered the information about the cannabis. He fully cooperated with police. He buys in bulk for his personal use. He boils up and drinks the cannabis in a tea form for his asthma."

Magistrate Fiona Densham said: "Mr Samuels, we accept that the cannabis was for your own personal use.

"This is why we impose a curfew of three months. We also order the destruction of the cannabis."

Samuels was also ordered to pay costs of £60.

“Did you see his name in the local paper,
    Stole a tin of beans,
    From a cut-priced grocery store.
The judge said he must pay,
So he put him on probation,
And the paper gave his name.

Did you see his name in the criminal section,
    And the center page.
Gave his name and his address,
They stopped him doing it again,
So they put him to dishonour,
And put the man to shame.

    He lost his little job,
His employer was absolved of blame.
    His world just crumbled down,
Incidently, did you see his name,
    In the obiturary column,
    Letters edged in black.
Life was much too hard to live,
So he brought it to an end,
    In his gas-filled maisonette.
Because he couldn't stand the strain.

    La-la-la-la-la
Life was much too hard to live,
So he brought it to an end,
    In his gas-filled maisonette.
Because he couldn't stand the strain.

    Did you see his name?”
