This unique bench covered in wool was unveiled in the foyer of Knowle West Media Centre to highlight a new arts project.

Birmingham-based artist Trevor Pitt has been in Knowle West for the past month holding knitting sessions with about 20 people in homes, public buildings and cafes.

Together they produced the Salon Bench Knowle West, one of eight for a project called the Knitting Salon.

Each knitter used moss stitch to create a section to cover a seat slat and a second piece of their own design for the corresponding back slat.

These sections were then knitted together to encase the whole bench in wool, remaking the traditional community bench. Although knitters use a set pattern, each piece is subtly different.

The bench has now been moved to the Arnolfini in Bristol where it forms part of the Craftivism exhibition, which runs from Saturday, December 12 to Sunday, February 14.

Trevor Pitt said: "It was great to work within Knowle West and with KWMC to showcase the hidden skills of knitters and the creative possibilities of knitting within an artistic context."

Trevor Pitt's project with Knowle West Media Centre was developed with the support of a Crafts Council Spark Plug Curator Award and was funded by Arts Council England, Bristol City Council and The Crafts Council.

“It would have been lovely if local spinners (of which there are many), along with a professional local feltmaker could have been used to have cut down on the carbon foot print. A thought provoking idea all the same though.”
