Children at Greenfield Primary in south Bristol met a local hero when Bristol City captain Louis Carey visited their school.

The central defender went to the primary in Novers Lane, Knowle West, yesterday to open a revamped outdoor learning and play area for the youngest children.

He spoke to all 300 pupils at an assembly and answered their questions before cutting a City-red ribbon outside and signing autographs.

Leigh Anstey, one of the reception teachers, said: "We chose Louis because he is a really positive role model. We want our children to know the benefits of healthy living and exercise."

Ms Anstey and fellow reception and nursery teachers Sarah Harvey and Caroline Wood worked with families of their pupils to raise £800 towards the new outdoor area through activities such as cake sales, a sponsored bike ride, an obstacle course and a sale of children's artwork.

The area has a sandpit, tightrope, stage, wooden Wendy House and benches for outdoor storytime.
