Bristol insurance workers inspired to help students
When Cotham schoolboy Badou Sisay took his GCSEs he planned on a future studying business.
But when he didn't get the grades he wanted his confidence took a knock and he became depressed about what to do with his life.
The 19-year-old was unsure how or where to find work and it was not until he found out about The Prince's Trust that things changed for the better.
Now his story has helped provide the inspiration for a group of workers at insurance company AXA, based in Stoke Gifford, who are competing to raise funds for the charity.
The eight-strong group, named Team Ambition, are holding a golf day as well climbing Dartmoor's tors to raise a minimum of £10,000 for the trust.
Team member Helen Vintiner, who works at AXA UK, in Stoke Gifford, said: "Badou saw an advert for The Prince's Trust on the internet and got the chance to go on a customer service course where he learned about food and hygiene, data handling and first aid. He also spent some time volunteering for the National Trust.
"His self-confidence has really grown since attending the course. He now feels comfortable meeting and working alongside new people and feels more self- assured when making decisions in a team. With his self-esteem boosted by his achievements throughout the course, Badou realised that his goal was still possible.
After studying a diploma in business he has since gone on to study for his National Diploma, with his eventual goal a degree in business management.
"We know that raising money will help young people in the city like Badou, so we are appealing to as many people as possible to help us reach our fundraising target."
The first of Team Ambition's events will be on Thursday, October 22, when they will hold a charity golf match at the Marriott St Pierre Hotel and Country Club, in Chepstow.
The four-ball golf experience costs £120 per person and includes a round of 18 holes on the Old Championship course and a three-course evening meal.
The second of the team's challenges will be a 35-mile trek of 10 tors on Dartmoor. The walk will take place on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday 29, and Team Ambition are looking for sponsorship to go towards their efforts.
