Two hoodies who carried out what a judge described as a "campaign of robberies" in Bristol have both been sent to youth custody for four years.

Andrew Lugo and Daniel Harvey targeted several people on their way to work early in the morning, including a 70-year-old man, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Harvey, 20, of Norton Farm Road, Henbury, admitted two robberies, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and attempted robbery.

Lugo, 20, of Rodway Road, Patchway, admitted two robberies and an attempted robbery.

Judge Simon Darwall-Smith told them: "You both set out on what can be described as a campaign of robberies on that day, using force or a weapon.

"You worked together as a team. These are serious offences which the public really fear and which they are entitled to be protected from."

Anna Midgley, prosecuting, told the court David Bean, 70, left home at 4.30am in October last year to go to work at Cribbs Causeway and was approached by the two men.

Harvey walked up to him "quickly and aggressively" before punching him to the face and kicking his hip as he lay on the ground.

Miss Midgley said: "Lugo was holding a 6in long kitchen knife and he felt inside Mr Bean's trouser pockets. There was a struggle, Mr Bean got up and handed over four £5 notes.

"Harvey said 'You know the situation we're in', shook his hand and hugged him before running off."

The court heard the victim identified the muggers by their clothes and Harvey's telephone was recovered from the scene.

Miss Midgley said Harvey alone attacked Steve Plenty in the same area by punching, kicking and butting him.

Though Mr Plenty thought his nose was broken he did not seek medical attention.

Both Lugo and Harvey admitted robbing Paul Smith of his bag after attacking him at the same place – Lugo armed with a blade.

The pair then tried but failed to rob Lester Faulkner, Lugo still with his knife, but he managed to get away, the court heard.

While Lugo had no previous convictions, Harvey had previous offences for possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting police.

David Chidgey, defending Harvey, said his client had had a difficult background and it would be his first custodial sentence.

Jonathan Stanniland, defending Lugo, conceded his client had shown a knife but stressed he had not attempted to use it.

    “My dear j0hn50n,

you may love your friends, but where they are going they will find other men to love them.

Upon their release they may well look upon your love in a different manner.

    good luck with your relationships.”

“... that I don't know these two criminals. Who would want to associate themselves with people who steal off old age pensioners at knife point. It's a shame that they are not going to real prison. They know how to deal with people who rob old age pensioners in there.”
