A chairty night which included a sponsored head shave has reined in more than £2,000.

Alan Hayman, 60, organised the event at the Sartan Club in Bishopsworth to raise money for Breast Cancer Care after his wife Lynda was diagnosed with breast cancer last December.

The club's treasurer Jane Cook died of breast cancer earlier this year and more than 500 people attended her funeral.

Both Mr and Mrs Hayman, 57, of King George's Road, Bishopsworth, took part in the head shave. Mr Hayman, who plays in a band, then performed on stage singing songs and playing his guitar.

"I felt a bit like Kojak," he said. "But it was a great night and everybody had a good time – there has always been a fantastic community spirit and nobody let us down.

"It's really important to have these fundraising events, not just to raise money but also to raise awareness of the disease. I cannot stress enough to the ladies that they need to get checked."

A raffle also raised more than £200 where winners snapped up a Bath Rugby shirt and ball signed by the team, a Bristol City football signed by the players and a pampering day at one of the city's Marriott Hotels.
