A Bristol man who walked out of Harvey Nichols wearing a Gucci hat he hadn't paid for said he thought no one would notice.

Samuel Obunike, of Strawbridge Road, Barton Hill, took the hat during a shopping trip to the Cabot Circus store, where he had bought and paid for a pair of trainers.

The 37-year-old appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to stealing the £140 hat on August 5 and possession of cannabis on September 7.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered he pay £85 costs.

May Li, prosecuting, said: "Mr Obunike went to the menswear section, chose a pair of shoes and picked up a hat. He paid for the shoes and then left without paying for the hat."

“What an idiot thinking they wouldn't notice - if you so much as brush a finger against an item of clothing in there, security guards want a DNA sample.”
