A Bristol golf club has won permission to build 10 homes to raise the revenue needed to improve facilities for its junior members.

The eight flats and two maisonettes will be built at the end of Fairway, a cul-de-sac near the entrance to Knowle Golf Club.

Architect Alan Franklin said the new homes would provide the club with economic stability during the recession.

It would also create funds for the junior section at the club.

Resident William Rington, of nearby Lucas Grove, submitted photos of flooding on the golf course which he said would affect the new homes.

But Mr Franklin said the surface water in the photos was not where the homes would be built.

Councillors were told that a stream which runs next to the proposed homes would be widened to cope with heavy rainfalls.

There would also be a pond to collect surplus water.

Chairman Tory Councillor Barbara Lewis said the homes would not be built unless the drainage officer was happy there would be no flooding.

The new homes will be built on the site of an empty bungalow which was formerly used by golf professionals.

A large storage shed will also be demolished to make way for the development.

The club's entrance will be widened and the barriers moved to allow 24-hour access to the homes.

Lib Dem Councillor Mary Sykes said: "It's not the best design in the world but there is nothing concrete to argue against it."

Councillors voted seven in favour with one abstention.

“I agree Pete, however the development is to be on the site of a on old bungalow and an unsightly shed. No greenfields will be lost. Infact, development of the land may well secure the long term future of the club. Lets be frank, if there were no golf course, it would already be a housing estate.”

“It is quite ironic that Knowle Golf Club should want to build on its land when the original course in Knowle is now covered by housing!

The original course ran from the rear of Knowle Cricket Club in Broad Walk nearly as far as Wedmore Vale, and down over Redcatch Hill.

Now that the former Imperial Athletic Sports Ground has diminished in size due to more housing, how long will it be before more green open spaces are built on?

Allotments in Callington Road are now occupied by the Hospital of the same name, Hengrove Park is also destined to be a new Hospital in the near future.

Anyone with a plot of land seems to be building on it nowadays!”
