Budding young golfers in the Bristol area are being given the chance to try the game for free next week.

The Bristol Golf Club, near Cribbs Causeway, is organising a week of free golf coaching for four to 18-year-olds of all standards from Saturday until March 28.

The sessions will be supervised by coaches who have been trained to teach youngsters.

Bristol Golf Club head coach Alex Day has taught hundreds of youngsters in a series of six-week courses in local schools during the last 12 months.

The school-based lessons are specially tailored to make them fun and accessible and are linked to the national curriculum.

The free golf lessons week is an extension of this scheme, as part of the club's commitment to promoting the sport from grass roots level.

Alex said: "We are really keen to get local youngsters into golf. It is a sociable sport, and we have devised some really fun ways to teach children of all abilities.

"As well as the schools' scheme, we've also given free lessons here at the club on an ad hoc basis. But now we are keen to provide a full week of free golf lessons, and to give local youngsters the opportunity to try out the sport for free. We might find the next Open Champion!"

Ben Laing, General Manager of The Bristol Golf Club, said: "It's important that we keep giving our local community reasons to come and experience this wonderful sport. Getting youngsters active and "into" a sport in a safe environment is something we feel can do better than any other club in the area.

"Alex Day and his team of PGA golf teachers have an impressive success rate as regards coaching local juniors to a high standard. We look forward to welcoming some new young faces to The Bristol Golf Club in March."

The Bristol Golf Club has a popular junior section, with regular competitions and coaching sessions.

In December 2009 the club signed up for the National Skills Challenge – a competition for children which culminates in a national finals event. This is a scheme not just for members of the golf club, but for all junior golfers in the area.
