TWO gastropubs in the Bristol area have been named among the top 50 in the UK.

The Albion, in Clifton, and The Pony and Trap, in Chew Magna, have been honoured in the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropubs Awards.

Clifton Village pub The Albion was placed at number 23 in the list, up 10 spots from last year.

The Pony and Trap took 13th spot – the second highest new entry this year and the best placed pub in Bristol and Bath.

Last year the watering hole was awarded a Michelin star, which it retained in October for this year.

Votes were collected from more than 500 top gastropub operators, pub company chiefs, food writers, food guide editors and top chefs to collate the UK's top 50 gastropubs. Winners were chosen through judging and site visits by industry experts.

Sophie De'Ath-Lancaster, manager at The Albion, said: "We are very pleased and proud to have been named in the top 50 again. We hope we can continue to go up in the table next year."

The Pony and Trap's head chef and owner Josh Eggleton said: "There are some truly fantastic pubs in the top 50 with many coming from the West Country; it's amazing to be grouped with some of the best performers in the pub trade.

"This accolade means a great deal as it was voted for by people within the industry."

“Best Sunday lunch in Bristol - White Bear on St Michaels Hill. Go there - and then tell me it wasn't fabulous! Very reasonable price too. I miss it.”

“When I used the Albion, it was good for a game of darts, a packet of cheese straws, and a cheap pint of cider.

    O tempora! O mores!”

“Last time I popped past the Albion it was over £4 for a pint so I turned back. Waaay too pricey despite whatever awards it won.”

"in your local pub how much is the average pint of beer, cider or lager or soft drink £3.00. £3.20. £3.50.????
Might have something to do with the closures,"

It certainly does. Care do guess how much of that is tax and the pubco's rake-off?

And how much would a similar pint cost in your local supermarket?”

"WoW , Chew Magna is now in Bristol!"

Still pretending you're not in the Bristol area, then bobob?

    @DavidBristol

They started as the same beer, but look what 70 years of corporate America has done to a superb Czech brew...”

“Corncups - It's Budweiser Budvar (the original Czech user of the name), not the American imitation thereof. Two (very) different beers.”

“Budweiser - probably the worst beer in the world.”
