A flashmob that bewildered shoppers in Bristol's Ikea store has helped raise £200 for an Alzheimer's charity.

The stunt saw people from across the city assemble, wait for a signal and then freeze in a pose among the furniture and fittings.

As well as providing shoppers with a strange experience the group raised the funds for BRACE, who posted volunteer collectors on the main entrance and exit doors of the store.

BRACE chief executive Mark Poarch said: "It is vital for a charity like ours to have new opportunities to raise money, but the biggest gift the flashmob has given us is heightened public awareness.

"We have to compete for attention with other causes and concerns, but Alzheimer's doesn't go away and the fight to beat it must be unremitting.

"Because of what happened at Ikea, many more people will now know that there is a charity in the West Country that is working with some of the world's leading research teams to cure Alzheimer's and other dementias.

"Thank you, again, to everyone who took part and everyone who donated."
