Youngsters learnt about the work of a farrier when Shane Pool staged a demonstration at the recently formed Grassroots Urban Horse and Pony Club in Knowle West.

Shane's family has a long connection with the area and horses and Shane lived in Knowle West in his childhood.

He is in his final year of training as a farrier and was invited to the club by his aunt, Tracey Pool, who set up the group in Knowle West for local children and teenagers who ride.

Many of them have their own horses and ponies and Tracey wanted to bring them together to learn more about horse care and to organise events for them, including various demonstrations and competitions.

The club is based at The Park Local Opportunity Centre in Daventry Road, and already has members from Knowle West, Hartcliffe and Withywood.

It is hoped to eventually set up an academy and the club is now being opened up to anyone interested in joining.

Tracey said: "We have already used heavy horses for ploughing demonstrations and we are going to start a driving club.

"We are also holding a member's in-hand show on Saturday, March 27, from 11am at the Novers Park Community Centre, Novers Park Road.

"We are looking for sponsorship for pony club uniforms, as well as donations of equipment such as show jumps."

The club's next meeting is at The Park on Wednesday, March 17, at 6.30pm. Anyone interested can go along or call Tracey on 07870 357744.
