Bristol drunk who attacked shopkeeper jailed
A knife-wielding drunk who was disarmed by a Bristol shopkeeper has been jailed for six months.
Intoxicated Ahmed Osman walked into the Dur Dur store in Stapleton Road and was aggressive to customers, Bristol Crown Court heard.
When shopkeeper Ismail Muse asked him to leave they exchanged blows and Mr Muse used a pole to knock a knife out of Osman's hand.
Osman had a previous conviction for having an axe in a similar incident.
The 34-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and was fined £100 by magistrates.
He also admitted possessing an offensive weapon, and magistrates sent that matter to Bristol Crown Court for sentence.
Judge Carol Hagen, who said it was "undesirable" for the offences to be sentenced separately, told him: "It's plain to me you have a problem in behaving in a certain way when you have taken too much drink on board and have had too much of the particular drug you seem to have a preference for."
John Mannion, prosecuting, told the court that having been pushed from the store, Osman produced the kitchen knife and made several threats to kill the shopkeeper.
He said: "Mr Muse took a pole from some shelving to knock the knife from the defendant's hand.
"The knife was retained and Mr Muse positioned himself between the defendant and the knife. Thankfully, the police arrived and the knife was recovered from the floor."
Osman told police he couldn't remember the incident, other than he had been very drunk and he was attacked with a pole.
He was adamant he didn't threaten anybody but stated he had the knife for his own protection as he had become paranoid.
Mr Mannion said although Judge Hagen had previously given Osman a community sentence with 80 hours of unpaid work, after he was found guilty of possessing an axe, the probation service deemed the order "unworkable" due to Osman's persistent ill health.
Jonathan Stanniland, defending, said his client had not "cocked a snook" at the probation service but had suffered poor health coupled with excessive drinking and persistent chewing of the herbal stimulant Khat.
Judge Hagen, who commended shopkeeper Mr Muse for his prompt disarming of Osman, ordered that the knife be destroyed.

“Here we go again. Only a six month sentence! How mind bogglingly ridiculous! He already has a conviction for a similar offence. So in a couple of months he will be out on the streets again. I wonder how long it will be before he kills someone. What a crazy, stupid criminal justice system we have.”
