Bristol drugs trial jury out
A jury has retired in the trial of an Olympic judo expert accused of being part of a £50 million-a-year Bristol drugs gang.
Former Olympian and teacher James Waithe owned a Bristol flat where police found a "cocaine factory", complete with drugs and guns.
Police called to a report of a burglary at Waithe's flat in Highridge Green stumbled on a 10-tonne hydraulic press, white powder and cutting agents, Bristol Crown Court previously heard.
The police also found an "arsenal" of weapons including rifles, handguns, stun grenades and ammunition.
It is claimed the gang were making £1 million pounds a week through cutting and selling cocaine.
Waithe, 47, told the court he owned the flat but did not live there and had nothing to do with the illegal enterprise.
He pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine, as well as possession of firearms to endanger life, and simple possession of firearms and explosives.
His co-defendant Robert Brooks, 63, of no fixed address, has pleaded guilty to the drugs conspiracy but denies the firearms charges.
Grant Richmond, of Long Cross, Lawrence Weston, and Craig Rodel, 46, of Wexford Road, Bristol, and Luke Downes, 22, of Pevensey Walk, Bristol, have all pleaded guilty to being involved in the conspiracy.
