Bristol cyclists are a two-wheeled menace
I have, over the years, through your letters page, tried to alert my local police force to the dangers of push bikes, pavements and pedestrians to no avail.
That is up to a few months ago when, at a public meeting, on a show of hands, said force were persuaded to "do something" about the two-wheeled law breakers that menace our area.
At the next meeting I attended, the local beat manager informed the congregation that he had monitored the said area and observed no cyclist! Repeat no cyclist.
This being a family newspaper I cannot repeat what my neighbours and fellow tax payers had to say about such a statement, but I can offer some advice to the people of Brislington.
Should you observe a four-wheeled Christmas tree complete with flashing lights and howling siren moving in your direction...run. For obvious reasons.
Incidentally, a few days after the meeting two accidents took place in the area where the monitoring had taken place, one of which I witnessed and reported to the police.

“Very good.
An excellent example of the previous point.
Quietly ignore the point of putting the issue into a proper perspective and fudge the issue with petty semantics instead.
Well done.”

“'Driving on the pavement'????
You mean 'Mounted the pavement'. Cars don't 'drive' on the pavement. They 'mount' them, usually when out of control. Unlike cyclists who use them as a private racetrack.”

“"Two wheeled menace". "Two wheeled law breakers".
Terrible. Outrageous. So far this decade THREE people have been KILLED by footway riding cyclists.
Even more terrible - outrageous - tragic.
In a typical YEAR: FORTY pedestrians are KILLED by motorists DRIVING on the footway.
Why does this kind of tragedy pass virtually without comment?
As Knapp has used up the word "menace" on two-wheeled unmotorised footway misusers, can she please suggest a suitable word for the four-wheeled motorised footway misusers, please.
I'm sure we'd all love to learn this new word.”

“As a cyclist I too get annoyed by cyclists riding on the pavement as it gives the rest of us who don;t do it as a bad rap too. I am also a pedestrian with small child and don't appreciate bikes passing my boy on the pavement.
Having said that, the times I see bikes riding dangerousley on the pavement is a million times less than the amount of times I see cars parked up the pavements, often leaving far too little space to get a pushchair past, let alone a wheelchair.
No one is perfect, no matter what method of transport they're using.”

“If I was going to call someone incoherent, I'd learn to spell it first.
Possibly it's James' semi-lteracy that makes him unable to understand a perfectly coherent letter...”

“Cyclists get hurt also on the road and cycling is a great healty passtime as well as being good for you. I agree when on the pavement they should be careful, however would you want your children on their bikes on a busy road.”
