One of Bristol's oldest independent companies is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year.

JV Barrett & Co Ltd (Barrettine Group) was originally founded by Mr JV Barrett in 1879 and traded out of River Street near the old docks area of the city.

The company then traded a range of products including whale oil, mineral oils, pitch, tar, gum turpentine, linseed oils and pearl glue.

The commodities were traded to merchants, as well as to the many ships and shipping lines that visited Bristol Docks.

In 1973, brothers Peter and Colin Bailey bought the company, which was the trading division of James Rudman Ltd, itself an old Bristol company manufacturing decorative and industrial paints.

Today, JV Barrett & Co is still owned and managed by the family, with Colin's son Steven Bailey as the group managing director.

It is now based in St Ivel Way in Warmley and has around 70 staff.

Although now semi-retired, surviving brother Colin remains group chairman.

The firm now has an annual sales turnover of more than £15 million, with four trading divisions.

These divisions include chemical blending and distribution, environmental health (pest control) products, manufacturing of wood preservers and DIY products and a contract packing business.

The extensive customer base includes major national retailers, manufacturers, pest control companies, local authorities and a growing export market.

Steve Bailey said: "With 2009 being our 130th anniversary, it may well turn out to be the best year ever in the history of our company."
