We spoke to commuters fighting their way in through the snow to get to work on Friday morning. They came by car, train and on foot – but not by bus...

Kirsty Mills, an 18-year-old student at the City of Bristol College, from Easton, said: "I had to walk all the way in from Easton. I didn't know the buses were cancelled.

"I have been walking for an hour an a half to get to my lessons, if the college is even open. The snow is annoying now, and I can't feel my feet."

Danielle Rex, 42, a bank worker from Nailsea, said: "We drove in from Nailsea. The drive in was very slow, and we were doing about 10-20mph.

"On the side roads it was very slippy, and on the B3130. The Long Ashton bypass was down to one lane.

"My feet are soaking wet through my boots."

Victoria Neale-Howard, a 31-year-old beauty laser therapist from Montpelier, said: "It has taken me nearly an hour to walk in from Montpelier, when it should have taken 20 minutes.

"I would normally walk in. It is quite dangerous for the buses to be running.

"People should probably stay at home or get a taxi in."

Dayley Lawrence, a 30-year-old NHS catering manager from Brislington, said: "I got a lift in to the Bath Road. It took an hour to walk to the centre.

"It is disappointing there is no bus service. In Brislington no roads were gritted apart from a small bit of the Bath Road.

"I have to come in, otherwise patients won't get fed."

Steve Hopkins, 42, a civil engineer from Clifton, said: "I would normally walk to work at Corn Street and it takes about 40 minutes.

"Today it took me about an hour, and I wore hiking gear. I have found it quite fun walking to work – people are just mucking in and getting on with it."

Simon Keen, 32, a builder from Filton, said: "I decided not to go into work. The sites are closed down because we can't build in these conditions.

"I have had to come in to go to the bank and I have had to walk all the way from Filton Avenue because it is too dangerous for buses."

Reema Bhatt, 22, a student from Clifton, said: "I got a train to Temple Meads from Gloucester. The trains are fine, it is just the buses. It is stupid.

"The minute there is adverse weather England collapses.

"It is pretty slippery out there, but there are buses running in Cardiff and Gloucester."

Adam Altmann, 27, a UWE student who lives in the city centre, said: "There is no bus to UWE, and it has been closed for two days.

"I don't know how it can be, as Bristol University is open. I am staying at home because there is no university and I can't get there anyway."

Tina Brown, 33, an assistant retail manager from Knowle West, said: "I have to be in work for 5.30am, so get up at 4.30am. I walked in from Novers Hill.

"I had my wellies on, but it was a struggle, especially as drivers kept splashing me.

"It was pretty miserable. But if cars can get in, buses should be able to as well."

Nick Coleman, 22, a retail assistant at Cabot Circus, who lives in the city centre, said: "I walk through Castle Park and have to wear a pair of boots, otherwise I would be on my backside.

"It is ok for me as I don't have to go far, but there could have been more done. The pavements are shockingly bad."

“I am lost for words? A liitle bit of snow and this country finds an excuse to bring everything to a halt including public transport? I have driven without problem around Bristol since day one, although with extra care, but the snow has not stopped anything? people are using it as an excuse to say the least? skive comes to mind.”
