THE centre of Bristol was gridlocked last night after an articulated lorry carrying 44 tonnes of gravel toppled over at the Temple Gate roundabout.

The white Volvo buckled a traffic light post as it spilled its load over the road at about 4.35pm.

Police cordoned off the roundabout and Bath Bridge.

By 10pm the lorry was back on its wheels but the clean-up was still taking place and not all of the entries and exits had been reopened. Earlier, traffic jams built up on all of the surrounding roads as commuters tried to make their way home. Great Western Ambulance Service treated the driver of the lorry for minor injuries.

“Speed limits indicate the maximum for a particular road & drivers are expected to adjust their speed according to conditions & that includes road camber, sharpness of bends, amount of traffic, weather, vehicle, loads etc etc. Things a professional driver should be doing as a matter of course but all to often fail to do so. No longer knights of the road I'm afraid.”

“Just to clarify, the vehicle would only have been carrying 29 tons of material, not 44.”

“like the pics mistamatrix, were you the guy with the camera on the stand ?

I was lucky, came the other way down the A4 just after it happened.
Am amazed a vehicle that size and weight rolled over...

Guess. it is lucky there were no injuries”

“Another lucky escape for passers by, caused by "professional drivers". Remember the Cumberland Basin last year, took days to sort it out.”

“Well, speed is relative. He might not have been going 'fast' by the standards of most motorists but he was clearly going faster than he should have been for a vehicle that size. I'm guessing (just my opinion) that he was tearing along Clarence Road to get through a green light by the Temple Gate Peugot garage and carried too much speed into the turn past Cattle Market Road up towards Bath Road. I see too often lorry drivers who seem to think they are in their cars when they tear around. Anyone who has seen Royal Mail vans at night - those are good examples!”

“Just arrived in Temple Meads and heard about what happened so cycled over and took a couple of pics. Spoke to a man from the company the truck belonged to and he said the driver was okay and fortunately no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved. He mentioned that something like this wouldn't have meant the driver was going fast, it was just to do with the sharpness of the bend and the camber on the road. The roads were gridlocked at about 7pm almost to Cabots Circus. Here's my pics:
