A Bristol chippy has been given the perfect 20th birthday present – a five-star accolade for the quality of its food.

Farrows Fish and Chips on the Wells Road in Totterdown has been recognised with the prestigious Seafish Friers Quality Award.

Seafish is the authority on seafood, and serves all sectors of the UK seafood industry. They set up the award to raise the standards within the trade and enhance the industry's profile.

Farrows is already the reigning Evening Post Chip Shop of the Year.

Owner Jonathan Farrow, 45, first opened a shop in Bedminster with his brother in 1989. Since then, he has also had a shop in Kingsway, but now the only shop they own is the Totterdown one.

Jonathan, who lives just up the road from the shop, said: "Since the sale of our popular Kingsway outlet in January, we have been able to fully concentrate our effort on our remaining Totterdown branch. Needless to say, we are delighted and proud to display the Seafish certification mark.

"We have always tried to do something a bit different with our shop. I run the place now with my partner Karen and stepdaughter Syrina, so it is family-run and we all care about what we produce. We cook everything to order and really try to produce great quality food."

To qualify for the award, a shop has to be inspected by someone from Seafish, who assesses the shop's image, design and condition, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills, and the quality of the cooked product.
