For fans of Rodney and Del Boy, a revamped Reliant Robin car could be the perfect wedding day transport.

And with the owner of the vehicle charging just £100 to hire it out there will be no need for couples to wait until they become millionaires.

Unlike the battered yellow van driven by Del Boy in comedy show Only Fools and Horses, this vehicle has had its roof removed, been painted white and is having leather seats fitted.

Mechanic Steve Ford, from Whitchurch, took on the project of revamping the 1984 three-wheeler after he spotted it on an online auction site.

The roof had already been removed and its previous owner was already transforming it into a wedding car, but a new engine and gear box was needed to get it moving.

Six months and about £1,500-worth of work later, Steve has nearly finished the car and is planning to rent it out for couples looking for something a bit different on their wedding day, or for charity events.

Steve, 50, said: "All my life I have specialised in classic cars and I love the weird and the wonderful.

"I am a fan of modern day Audis but I particularly like old stuff - Triumphs, MGs and anything that's a bit extrovert.

"I decided I wanted something a bit quirky to drive into work in Bristol and spotted this little Reliant online."

Steve drove over to Magor in Gwent to look at the car and parted with £800.

He said: "It can either be used as a wedding car to travel a short distance from home to the church, or the church to reception.

"I have also thought about taking it along to charity events. I do a lot for cancer research and thought I could take it along to fundraising days and give people rides in exchange for donations. It's something different."

Steve thinks his Reliant Robin could be the perfect transport for a budget wedding in the current financial climate and has been asking friends and colleagues for their views on the vehicle.

He said: "I sent a price list and photographs to a girlfriend at work and said that if boyfriends had been putting off marriage with the excuse that it cost too much, there were no excuses with this car.

"People who would hire this for a wedding car are going to be a bit extrovert and quirky. They're not concerned with going the normal route with a great big, ugly limo thing. This is a one-off."

Steve's next project is turning a 1988 Fletcher speedboat into another roadworthy wedding-mobile.

“I can't see why fans of Only Fools and Horses would get excited over a Robin Reliant. If the car in the report were a Reliant Regal Supervan III, it might be a different.”

“I hope this scheme works out better than my experience.
I spent £2000 converting my scooter to a stretch Vespa with 4 seats.
I was the chauffeur, groom next, bride followed by chief bridesmaid. 4 at the church, but I'm afraid there were only 3 when I reached the reception.

    Why not Hourbikes for weddings?”
