Breast cancer surgeons, doctors and nurses are set to move from the city centre to the new Southmead Hospital as part of a Bristol-wide review of services.

Under the proposals, all specialist breast care treatment will be housed in the superhospital to enable the team to work with plastic surgeons.

Final approval is yet to be given for the project, but a full decision should be made by the end of the year.

While the new Southmead Hospital is not due to be completed until the end of 2013, aspects of the review will be put in place from next year.

Work is being done to make space available in the new hospital building so that breast care can be based on the site.

The Breast Care Services Review was launched after members of a charity fought the decision to base all services at St Michael's Hospital early last year.

Bust (Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust) believed people were not fully consulted when the Bristol Health Services Plan (BHSP) drew up proposals to centralise services and called for a review to be carried out so that patients could have their say.

Under the plans, Southmead will provide a one-stop breast clinic for new referrals suspected to have cancer so patients can have the necessary tests and will be given their results the same day.

Specialist breast care nurses will be based at the site along with surgeons.

Weston General would become a satellite hub, providing the same type of service as it currently does. The most complex cases would be referred to Southmead, along with those where patients wanted reconstruction carried out by plastic surgeons.

Other sites across the Greater Bristol area will be used for check-ups, so that women can go to clinics closer to their homes for follow-up appointments.

A decision is now being made about the locations for the community clinics or "spokes", which will be based at sites around the Greater Bristol area.

Meetings will be held next month to give people the chance to find out more and comment on the proposals.

Daphne Havercroft, a breast cancer survivor, was among the women on the project board for the review.

She said: "I think we have made good progress.

"Bristol patient groups were unanimous in preferring Southmead to a city centre site because they felt locating the hub on the same site as plastic surgeons increased opportunities for more choice in breast reconstruction, more advanced techniques for breast conservation surgery, better cosmetic results and more research into reconstructive techniques and the psychological effects of breast surgery."

Helen England, director of commissioning for NHS Bristol, said: "We had two really good options for where to house the hub and are confident that the new Southmead will have the right facilities.

"We are working hard to make the new service as successful as possible by creating community-based spokes."

Acting medical director and breast surgeon at Weston Area Health Trust Nick Gallegos said: "The majority of patients in Weston, whose surgery can be done just as effectively in Weston as in Bristol, will benefit in the knowledge that their cases will have been discussed by the whole team to ensure that they get the very best treatment."

The meetings will be held on November 13, from 9-11am at the cafe in Weston General; noon-2pm at the Central Health Clinic, Tower Hill; and 3-5pm in the board room at Cossham Hospital.
