A strike planned by binmen across Bristol has been called off at the last minute.

Refuse drivers, loaders and street cleaners from Sita, the council's waste contractors, were expected to down tools today in a row over pay.

But in a last-minute U-turn they showed up for work at the Sea Mills and Hartcliffe depots this morning.

Up to 35,000 homes that could have been left with uncollected rubbish will now have their waste taken away.

Brown food waste boxes and black wheelie bins will be collected as usual, and street cleaning is expected to be carried out as normal.

The 271 Sita staff who are members of the union Unite are now in discussions with union staff to negotiate pay claims.

The workers had planned to strike in protest at an offer of a 2.75 per cent pay increase, which Unite officials said was "a pay cut".

A strike scheduled for Tuesday is still expected to go ahead at the moment.

Bristol City Council is advising residents to put their bins out today, and if they are not picked up to take them in and put them out again next week.

“Thank you BEP for confirming what a bin looks like.

I might use your 'buy a picture' function and stick it by my front door so I don't forget.”

“I doubt I would even know if they went on strike if it occurred in the 2 week period my bins are collected.

Also a 2.5% increase seems a fairly good deal when most people aren't getting any increase this year.”

“My bins are not collected on a Friday but this artical states "Bristol City Council is advising residents to put their bins out today"

Should I rush home and put my bin out?

What a rubbish situation I now find myself in!”
