AN amateur Bristol photographer has started a series of exhibitions which reflect the different areas of the city.

James Koch is using venues in the areas where the photos were taken for his "postcode exhibitions".

The first – featuring Redland and other parts of the BS6 postcode area – is being staged at The Kensington Arms pub and restaurant in Stanley Road. The second display is at Hermanos at the Clifton Triangle and features snapshots of Clifton – in the BS8 postcode area.

James, 29, a former nightclub promoter from Clifton, first picked up a camera a year ago to take with him on walks around the city.

He said: "When you have no destination, when you have nowhere in particular to go, you start to see things that you may once have missed.

"The combination of natural and man-made beauty is all around us.

"It's not that we don't know it's there – we do. It's just that usually we are too busy to stop and see it.

"I'd love to walk every last inch of this city. The more I scratch under the surface, the more I find exists."

Michele Webber, a customer at the Kensington Arms who lives in Redland, said: "I think the different shots really reflect the diversity of the area.

"Some you have to look hard at, and think to identify where they are because they are views from an unusual perspective, but they show the area in a positive light."

Ashley Sharif, 21, who lives in Gloucester Road, said: "I think the exhibition really fits in with the ethos of the bar, which is very much about sourcing things locally, including ingredients for food and making their own bread on site.

"Now they are exhibiting work from local artists. The photos have a lot of depth to them and I particularly like the picture of the launderette called Fresh. It's very textured."

Ian Rayner, co-owner of The Kensington Arms, said: "We are really excited about this exhibition.

"It is the first we have ever had here, and I think the first of many – James has inspired us to think about turning one wall of the pub into an exhibiting wall for local artists."

James Smailes, owner of Hermanos, said: "This is what we are all about – we're a little independent bar and we want to support local artists. The photos are great because they are all taken in this area, our customers are going to love them."

The exhibitions are James's first, and further ones are planned in May of photos taken in the city centre, BS1, at Severnshed and shots taken in BS7, at a Bristol venue to be confirmed.
