Bristol arsonist jailed after house fire
A tenant with a history of causing arson who set fire to his Bristol lodgings after falling out with his landlord has been jailed for public protection.
John Chadwick, who had a liking for alcohol and fireworks, caused the blaze to his room at Vicarage Road, Whitehall, on New Year's Eve, Bristol Crown Court heard.
The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.
Passing the sentence, of which Chadwick must serve at least three years before he is considered for release, Judge Jamie Tabor QC told him: "It is simply a question of luck whether someone's life is lost, whether they be a firefighter, neighbour or someone living there."
Chadwick had previous convictions for arson in which he had torched cars he had broken into and also set fires inside houses, the court heard.
Stephen Mooney, defending, said Chadwick had turned to drink after a fall out with his landlord.
