BATHAMPTON Avon Aquatics team captain Kevin Dicks set a new six-hour match record and won the Pairs Trophy almost single-handed on his way to winning the Lower Avon Championships for the third time.

The Bristol-based PAA coach hammered out a massive 42 all-bream catch totalling 189-13-0 with a groundbait feeder, worm and caster fished at two-thirds across from the cattle drink peg 30 on the Newbridge Straight.

He said: "I balled in groundbait at the start but it was 90 minutes into the match before I caught my first fish. From then on I caught one with almost every cast and hooked and netted my last fish coming up to the all out."

Dicks' pairs partner, Dave Micklewright, finished in ninth place with 40-11-0, and the pair finished easy winners with a record breaking combined weight of 230-8-0.

The best fish was a record-nudging 9-7-0 bream which earned its captor, Phil Harding, a £50 bonus. The Avon Angling rod fished a groundbait feeder and caster at two thirds across from peg 7 in the little field and weighed-in seven bream and six chub totalling 68-10-0.

The 21 contestants weighed in a total of 960-1-0 of fish an average catch of 45-12-0.

Steve Preece cruised to a comfortable 59-15-0 victory in the Fry's AC match fished on Match Lake and North Pool at Bullock Farm, Kingston Seymour.

He alternated between pellet and meat which he poled tight to the island off peg 25 and weighed in a mixed catch of silvers and carp. Top of the silverfish list was Dave Aitchley with 23-8-0 of skimmers, roach and hybrids taken close to the island off peg 10 with caster and maggot.

Result: 1, Steve Preece 59-15-0, peg 25; 2, Gary Bedford 32-10-0, peg 24; 3, Mike Ferguson 26-13-0, peg 27; 4, Andy Curry 26-10-0, peg 12; 5, Tony Rixon (Avon Angling Mosella) 26-4-0, North Pool 24; 6, Dave Aitchley 26-1-0, peg 10.

Silverfish: Dave Aitchley 23-8-0; 2, Mike Ferguson 18-8-0.

Bristol's Tony Rixon clinched victory by a clear 7lb in the Landsend Fisheries Open fished on John's & Sidney's Lakes at the Wedmore fishery.

He poled 6mm banded pellet at 14 metres towards the island off John's 68 and netted 68-8-0 of carp weighing in the 2-8lb class.

Somerset Angling's team captain, Steve Kedge, topped the silverfish list with a 25-4-0 mixed bag taken with caster and maggot poled at 3 metres centre off John's 41.
