Six organisations have said they are interested in taking over the running of two information advice centres that were closed earlier this year.

The Information and Advice Centre in Southmead, known as Scart, and two others in Lockleaze and Lawrence Weston shut their doors in March after Government funding ran out.

Local health project Working In Southmead for Health (WISH) has agreed to reopen the Southmead branch in Greystoke Avenue next month, but the future of the other two branches still hangs in the balance.

Bristol City Council has held a meeting with a number of local organisations to discuss the possibility of running the Lockleaze and Lawrence Weston branches.

The council has not disclosed the names of the agencies, but they have until Tuesday to make their interest official.

After a decision is made agencies would be provided with a grant to fund the centres until March 2010.

The closures provoked outrage among local people, as they provided valuable help for people struggling with the current financial downturn.

They also hosted a number of other organisations, including the Citizens Advice Bureau, Bristol Credit Union, Connexions and had a local police surgery.

A council spokesman said: "The WISH contract has now successfully gone through.

"WISH will now manage the Southmead Scart shop, which will open again in May for the financial year.

"The opening date is still being negotiated.

"On Monday, April 20, the Economic Regeneration Team hosted an 'expressions of interest' meeting for the Lockleaze and Lawrence Weston Information and Resource Centres. Six agencies attended the meeting and they have been given until May 5 to express an interest in managing one or both of the centres."
