Bristol YMCA vow to come back even stronger
Bristol YMCA may have missed out on promotion from Division One of the Bristol & District League but they have vowed to come back stronger next season.
Saturday's 32-run defeat against Bristol Pakistanis has left them too far adrift of second-placed Hanham with one match to go.
Skipper John Colley believes the batsmen have not performed as a unit this summer.
He said: "Overall, if you look at the averages of our top batsman last year, it has not gone their way this season. The batting has not performed as a unit and that has probably cost us.
"We are a little bit gutted to lose by 30 runs against Bristol Pakistanis. We had a good chance to chase Pakinstanis' 243-8 down.
"Hopefully, we can address this problem and we will be up there and fighting for the top spot.
"It's a key aim of the club to get into the Senior Division and then hopefully out into Bristol & Somerset. That might take a bit of work, though."
But the Henleaze-based outfit have had a season to remember.
They may be looking at a fourth-placed finish in Division One but two of their reserve sides are challenging for honours. And the club's fifth team are still going strong in their inaugural season.
Colley added: "The club has had a good year. The first team cannot win promotion any more. They lost to Bristol Pakistanis last weekend, so that was unfortunate. But the seconds can win their Senior Division for the first time in the club's history.
"The fourths lost their first game of the summer last weekend, but they had won 13 out of their previous 13 matches.
"This is the first year we have had five teams. It has been a good year as far as the club is concerned. The youth teams have had their best seasons in the club's history. All things have gone well. It is a shame the firsts haven't gone up."
Meanwhile, third-placed Bristol Pakistanis and second-placed Hanham clash tomorrow in the final match of the season at Netham Playing Fields to see who will clinch promotion to the Senior Division.
Hanham are more than a point behind leaders Phoenix West Indians, who take on Frampton Cotterell, on 19.4 average points, while the Pakistanis are on 19.36.
