Bristol 2018 World Cup bid could make history
Today could be one of the most important days in Bristol's sporting history.
It's the day the city welcomes the FA delegates who will help to decide whether Bristol will be chosen as a World Cup venue as part of the England 2018 bid.

Bristol 2018 World Cup bid could make history
The seven men and women are on a tour of 16 English cities, from which 12 will be chosen to host World Cup games.
And the Bristol Evening Post's message to them is very simple – when it comes to football and hosting events on a world stage, Bristol can kick it.
The world already knows about Brunel's suspension bridge. Used as the inspiration for crossings from Sydney to San Francisco, it is a reminder of the vital role Bristol played in England's industrial development.
If the delegates were to stand on the bridge, they would survey a scene which encapsulates the city's suitability to host World Cup football. Firstly, they couldn't fail to notice its setting – the impressive gorge around them is a wonderful example of England's rural splendour.
Looking south, just a football kick away is the site of Bristol City's impressive new stadium, the potential venue for World Cup games. Next to that sits Ashton Court – our unique, council-owned country estate – which could play host to a huge Fan Fest, where thousands of supporters would watch the games unfold on giant screens.
Kick a ball north from the bridge and it would land on the pitches of the Downs League. More than a century old, the league is a footballing one-off. The hundreds of players in its 56 teams play their games alongside each other on more than 30 pitches marked out on parkland. These players represent a tiny percentage of the tens of thousands of men, women, boys and girls who play and support football in this area.
And all along the south horizon is Bristol itself. Having played such an important part in England's history, this is now one of the most diverse, forward-looking and vibrant cities in the country – a city which is united and excited about the prospect of World Cup football.

“Something's surely wrong here! Why isn't the BEP campaigning to have the planet's greatest sporting event in held in the exclusive and glamorous surroundings of world-famous Weston-super-Mare?”

“What a bunch of pessimist old fools some of you are. I bet most of you are the ones that complain Bristol is a behind the times. For the ones that are saying we'll only get the rubbish games, erm, you better get your facts right before posting such twaddle. The ''better'' games are also shared out, and will include seeded teams. Bristol needs something to put it on the map, and if you don't like it, then leave for a few weeks and let the rest of us enjoy the biggest tournament in the world. Think about what it would bring to the city, and before you start spouting about ''football hooligans'' you¿re nothing but short sighted, and on the same level as a racist with your stereotypical tripe. Ok, so now we move to traffic..... erm, have you ever been to Manchester, London or even Paris, Rome etc etc? They can cope with major events, so why should we have a problem? Some of you forget that we have one of the biggest car parks in Europe. We also managed to accommodate 150,000 for the ballon fiesta. So 42,000 will be ok I¿m guessing. Why do people keep putting up barriers? Embrace that ''our'' city is trying to achieve great things, something that our children and maybe even our children¿s children will talk about. We can move on to the money it will bring, jobs, pride... For those of you that don't want it, just be quiet and don't ruin it for those that do. YOU don't have to take part, you can stay in and watch Countdown as usual. RANT OVER”
