BRISTOL & West AC veteran Mick O'Doherty cruised to victory in the Marshfield Mudlark 10k multi-terrain race, near Bath.

O'Doherty and in-form Tom Fisher dominated the race to finish six minutes clear of the field, with O'Doherty using all his experience and strength to pull clear for a rare win.

Mark Searle, of Bitton Road Runners, finished in fifth place, while club-mate Fiona Cramp finished as runner-up in the women's race, which was won by Corsham's Amanda Lindsay, who was a fine fifth overall.

Bitton's Vanessa Hawkins was the fifth woman to finish and third veteran over-35, while local runners Yvonne Cox and Joanna Wilson also made the top 10.

Portishead Running Club's Ann Singer finished third in the Burnham-on-Sea half-marathon.

Singer finished in 1hr 31mins 07secs, just under five minutes behind the winner, Alice Hector of Wells City Harriers. Weston AC's Pam Withers won the veterans' over-50 prize.

The top local runner in the men's race was Clevedon AC's Steve Hollier, who finished ninth overall and second veteran over-50 behind Devon's John Shapland.

Terry Welch, of Bitton Road Runners, ensured further local success by lifting the veterans' over-60 prize. Hogweed Trotters' over-60s veteran Rob Smith ran a personal best of 1:43.24.

Dan Moore clocked the second fastest time of the day at the British Masters Cross Country Relays, staged in Mansfield.

Sadly Bristol & West AC could muster only three runners and so failed to finish a team in the event, won by Herne Hill Harriers.

Nailsworth runner Dan Robinson finished as top Briton on his return to action in Sunday's BUPA Great North Run.

In his first competition since finishing 24th in the marathon at the Beijing Olympics, the Stroud & District AC runner came 13th in the half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields, covering the 13.1 miles in 64mins 10secs.

"Dan should be pleased with that in his first race back," said coach Chris Frapwell.

"That is his second fastest time ever at the distance, behind his PB of 63:42, and at this stage of the season it is pretty good."

Robinson's decision to compete was a late one as he had been struggling with a cold all week.

Also competing in the men's race was Pat Hall, of Hogweed Trotters, who finished in 1:48.26, while in the women's race Bristol & West AC's Claire Conway clocked 1:33.20 in 68th.
