See it in Bristol Watershed's 30 hours
Way back in the dark ages of 1982, we'd just been blessed with a fourth national TV channel. There was no satellite broadcasting, multiplex cinemas had yet to arrive, and nobody had heard of the internet. It was against this backdrop that Britain's first media and communications centre opened in a pair of old warehouses in Bristol's run-down docks.
Next week, the Watershed marks its 30th birthday with a massive celebration of great film and TV produced or made in Bristol. Running for 30 hours over all three screens, this includes classics from Aardman and the BBC's Natural History Unit, extracts from dramas as diverse as Skins and The Monocled Mutineer, and a huge range of local community productions. There's also an opportunity to catch a preview of the new iFeatures film, 8 Minutes Idle. Best of all, it's all free! See www.watershed.co.uk/30 for the full programme.
As part of the birthday celebrations, an expanded Sunday brunch season running throughout June focuses on films with Bristol Connections. Some are pretty obvious, such as Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop and token Cary Grant flick His Girl Friday. The King's Speech and Shame are included because Oscar-winning producer Iain Canning is a Bedminster boy. Chris Petit's Sting-starring Radio On boasts the distinction of being the only road movie to be set on the M4. But what about the Robert Mitchum thriller Cape Fear? Well, director J Lee Thompson was born in Westbury-on-Trym. And Citizen Kane? Turns out Orson Welles' creative partner John Houseman was educated at Clifton College.
