Bristol University lecturer Jimmy Doyle raised £500 for charity in the 10-mile Great South Run.

The run was his first race – but it made him decide to do the London Marathon next year.

Mr Doyle, 44, from Clifton, joined 19,000 others – including Paula Radcliffe – in a rain-drenched Portsmouth on Sunday, October 26 and completed the run in one hour 35 minutes.

He raised the money for the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAfOD), which works to end poverty in developing countries.

"I didn't get much sleep the night before and was cold and miserable in the morning but I was determined and so glad I got through it," he said.

"I did the run to raise money for CAfOD and thought this would be a good incentive to get fitter. My colleagues have been very supportive."

CAfOD workers travel underprivileged countries and respond to emergencies such as natural disasters and civil war.

The charity promotes long-term development, raises awareness of poverty, speaks out on behalf of poor communities, and promotes social justice.

Volunteers and staff work in more than 50 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Mr Doyle lectures in philosophy at Bristol University.
