Bristol Tory leader Eddy: Council are 'Christmas killjoys'
Bristol Tory Leader Richard Eddy has accused council officials of being "Christmas killjoys" for issuing a list of seasonal health and safety warnings.
People are being reminded by trading standards officials that festive accidents could turn a happy Christmas into a miserable one.
They are urged to adopt a raft of "commonsense precautions" which include the following tips:
● If your tree lights don't work or are damaged, get yourself a new set.
● Always read the instructions attached to decorations or novelty products such as Christmas crackers or Santa's sacks as they will give important safety information.
Councillor Eddy said: "Nobody would question the wisdom of taking commonsense precautions about the home but the latest guidance from the health and safety zealots is just insulting.
"Wasting time, money and energy telling people to get a new set of Christmas tree lights if their original set is broken – and urging the importance of reading the instructions on Christmas crackers – is a classic example of the nanny state gone mad."
A council spokesman said: "The last thing we want is to ruin people's Christmas, but the accident rate is so high at this time of year."

“Could this explain why the lights are so cr@p AGAIN this year. Councillor Eddy should've know better than to expect anything else The whole bunch of 'em are killjoys every year!
I spent a weekend in Madrid and theirs were lovely. I am really sick of the council skimping on the lights. They arent even Christmas ones they are 'winter' decorations. What was that they were saying a few months back about having brilliant decorations this year?”

“It may seem like the "Nanny state gone mad", but unfortunately a lot of people are idiots and they need all the help they can get.”
