This is Bristol

Say what you like about Tesco – and my goodness its detractors certainly do – but you only have to drive into one of its car parks to see it must be doing something right.

The evidence was there in Callington Road, Bristol, yesterday. Row after row of cars were parked outside the big Tesco store. Inside, shoppers were filling their trollies with everything from Easter eggs to special-offer mixed cases of white wine.

I often shop there. My youngest son loves the place (especially the magazine and toy section). If he had his way all our shopping trips would involve wheeling a trolley along its wide aisles, rather then traipsing in and out of numerous small stores in our nearest shopping street.

The news his favourite shop will soon have an in-store bank is likely to be of little interest to him.

But as they know only too well at Tesco, every little helps.

Following the recent financial turmoil, many shoppers will surely be delighted to bank somewhere they know and trust.

It should be no surprise Tesco identified this need – and did something about it.

For at Tesco, the consumer is king.

Britain's biggest supermarket chain may have a reputation among some suppliers for being a tricky customer.

But being a customer at Tesco is like being in a relationship with an adoring suitor, who showers you with everything from pet insurance, to CDs, to books, to banking – oh, and groceries.

Of every £8 spent on shopping in this country £1 is spent at Tesco.

Anti-supermarket purists may claim that this is evidence of what is wrong with Tesco.

Those of us who shop there, however, would argue it's proof of that many things that are right about it.
