Bristol Sports Personality 2008
Who is your 2008 sports personality of the year for Bristol?
Gary Johnson led Bristol City to within minutes of life in the Premier League, the dream of back-to-back promotions from League One only faltering in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Bristol Rovers' striker Rickie Lambert leads the scoring charts after pledging his future to the Pirates and has topped the goal tables in all divisions this season with a remarkable strike rate.
Nailsea's Chris Wood took the golfing world by storm this year, winning the silver medal (top amateur) at The Open in July, turning professional and earning a place on the European Tour by finishing in the top 30 at the final qualifying school in Girona, Spain, on Tuesday.
Somerset CCC captain Justin Langer came within a whisker of bringing the LV County Championship title to Taunton, losing out on the final day to Durham.

“As a gashead, rickie lambert would get my vote from natural instinct. He has wonders at rovers and in the future will always be remebered as a one of the top class strikers this club has had. However in sence of what has been achieved Gary Johnson has honestly probably top him. Im not a biased fan and i have to say fair play to Johnson for getting City so close to the Prem at the first attempt in the Championship. Without Johnson in charge there, City would be a average championship side hovering around mid-table, and probably would of been the same senario last season. But now looking at it again in a different form, Rickie beat Gary Johnson with his strike in the JPT and that has to come into consideraton.”

“I would have to say Gary J, with out a doubt. To get BCFC within a whisker of the premier league in only thier first season in the championship is fantastic. You cant say Lambert for 2008, the season is on going, if he can keep up the pace maybe a contender for 2009!!”

“Woody! What can I say, true gent and a role model for up and coming golfers, If you work really really hard at something you can achieve anything. Chris has proved this by working extra hard and has a very bright future ahead of him. Good luck mate!”

“What a great example of a family that have supported thier son to reach the highest level in one of the hardest games, you do it with skill and mental abiltiy unable to hide in a team you are on your own with a club in your hand. Pure talent and a nice guy. Bring on the rest of the world, he will do it.”

“Chris Wood played the world's top golf tournament against the best the world of golf could throw at him - and he came 5th - this is an amazing achievement - one that has brought honour to Chris, to his club (Long Ashton), to the people of Bristol - we have our own world champion in Chris Wood.”

“On the subject of axing the 74 and X74 buses (yesterdays EP) I would like to challenge Mr Justin Davies to get off his smug backside and out of his cushy office in enterprise House and actually walk the length of Baileys Court Road preferably with two bags of shopping to get an idea of what it will be like for the people who live up at the end near Ellen Hay Road for example. I sometimes wonder what qualifications he has to run a bus company. A sense of fair play is not one of them. He is clearly not one to worry about public opinion. Neither is it for the satisfaction or pleasure from seeing the benefits and rewards of running a well maintained service that provides a an efficient clean city wide bus network that people might actually use instead of the car. No, I fear he is more interested in lining his and the shareholders pockets of our money earned from some of the highest fares in the UK.
Call me cynical but I think we have all been here before. Nothing we change or improve while First has the monopoly on public transport throughout Bristol and environs and Bristol City Council sits on the fence.”
