A Bristol Scout group celebrates its 60th anniversary this weekend.

The 58th Bristol (1st Eastville) Scout Group, which is based at the Scout Resource Centre in Gadshill Road, was founded by Gilbert Williams in 1949.

Mr Williams started the group because scouting was proving to be very popular in the post war years.

Meetings started at Eastville Girls School Hall but, as numbers grew, they moved to Coombs Hill School until 1954. They then moved to a disused army hut in Gadshill Road but outgrew it and plans were drawn up to create a new home.

With the help of parents working weekends and in all sorts of weather the new Scouts HQ took shape and was officially opened in 1983. In 1991 girls were accepted into the group. There are now 44 members, boys and girls.

Group Scout Leader Steve Jones said: "Scouting is as popular as ever and I would encourage all members past and present to come along to celebrate our anniversary.

"Everybody is really looking forward to it and it should be a wonderful night."

The group will celebrate their anniversary with a barbecue, live music, circus skills and refreshments between 6 and 9pm onSaturday.

Those wishing to go along are asked to contact former group chairman Mike Lloyd on 0117 9391352.
